Licensed Companion – In the year 2058, prostitution has been legalized. Licensed Companions are required to go through training and testing in order to perform sexual acts for pay. They can be licensed for men and/or women. Licensed Companions are required to undergo health and drug checks monthly. If found to be using illegal drugs, the can have their license suspended, be dropped down in ranking, or lose their license. There are several levels of Licensed Companions, including street level, and club level,[1] up through the elite level that includes In Death's most popular LC, recurring character, Charles Monroe.
- Companions can be licensed for men and women; there is a required monthly exam.[2]
- Licensed Companions must be 18 years of age before they can apply for their license.[3]
- The training, licensing fees, mandatory health exams, and sin tax all ate into profits.[4]
- A professional wasn't supposed to accept cash or credit bonuses. Not technically. But everyone did.[5]
- According to Feeney, most LCs are safer than teachers.[6]
- Street hookers worked twenty-four/seven, but usually in shifts.[7]
- According to Charles, "... tested physically ensure against disease or condition. You undergo some psychiatric evals, to hopefully eliminate any sexual deviants or predators. And to keep your license current, you're required to have regular exams ... The level of your license is determined not only by your preference, but your skills. Intelligence, knowledge of art and entertainment, your ... style."[8]
- Professional companions are rigidly screened. A dislike – or disdain – is a usual reason for denial of licensing.[9] They are screened thoroughly before licensing and thereafter to keep the license.[10]
