Chapter 9As Peabody and Dallas made their way to the commander’s office they discussed the killer.
“Dallas, I know you said you suspected someone in the lab why? We’ve had killers who have left us very little before.”
“Peabody we are not talking about very little we are talking about absolutely nothing. No dust footprints, no fibers nothing. Think about it we aren’t even getting prints, fibers from the victim in the kill zone. Granted in the other areas there are traces of the victims but they really don’t matter but in the kill zone there should be some trace of them.”
“But we know Dickey’s people one of them couldn’t be a killer.”
“Really we know Dickey’s people tell me this what does Harvo do for fun? What are Truman’s children’s names? How long has Robertson been married? What is Dickey’s birthday?”
“I don’t know any of that I guess. In fact I didn’t even know that someone named Truman or Robertson worked there.”
“That’s what I am saying you can’t know everybody and you can’t know everything about them. Remember how long you knew me before I told you about my past. People keep secrets from people they work with.”
“Okay I can’t take it for granted I got it.”
Once they arrived at the commander’s office Dallas mentally prepared for her pitch for eyes in her office. As she entered she noticed that Mira was also in the office. “Mira I’m glad to see you I planed on talking to you again later.”
“Really, I was unaware of this.”
“ Something came up after I left you this morning but I wanted to ask Don Webster a couple of questions and what I could do within regulations to help find something out.”
“Dallas, what was it that you talked to Webster about?”
“The, postcards sir. They are not being delivered in the mail they are being hand carried and put one my desk during the graveyard shift sir. The card from yesterday was right in the middle of the paperwork. Then today’s card was right in the middle of the paperwork. There is something else Dr Mira, Commander I may be wrong but I don’t think so I think that the killer may be one of the lab tech’s.”
“One of the lab tech’s why?”
“I was just talking to Peabody about this. There has been nothing found at our scenes and by nothing I mean absolutely nothing not even signs of our victims other than what the killer wanted us to find. The drugs and the alcohol. With this last killing the victims left hand was removed Peabody can explain that I was with Mira while Peabody was with the body. In regards to what Webster suggested that I my want to put eyes in my office until this case is over hoping that we can get a look at who is delivering the postcards.”
“That may be an idea but I don’t see how the budget to install cameras in the office and then to remove them it would cost to much.”
“That’s fine sir if it is okay with you I will ask Roarke to install and remove the cameras.”
“That could work. I will approve of that I want the feed to go to EDD though.”
“Of course I would not have it any other way sir. Now Peabody about the scene?”
“Yes sir, once Officer Carmichael and I arrived at the scene of Graham Harsten’s murder we found that as the lieutenant stated the left hand had been removed causing us to think that Graham had scratched his killer and rather than chance his DNA being placed in the system for comparison he took the hand, But in addition to that I didn’t really think about it but now that I am talking about it there was very little blood at the scene. When the hand was severed from the arm there should have been more blood there. If I would estimate the amount of blood at the scene I would say that there was less than a teaspoon of blood.”
“Interesting, that is very interesting. Dallas I think that you could be right about this it may be someone who works or used to work in forensics.”
“Dallas, with this new information that you were able to provide I will work up a profile and have it ready for you sometime tomorrow.”
“Thank you Dr Mira I just hope that it’s not to late for his next victim.”
“I hate to say this Eve but it is already to late for the next but you maybe able to save the one after that. Eve you can’t blame yourself for the one’s that you can’t save but be thankful for the one’s you can.”
“Okay. Peabody and I need to get back to it and I need to get in touch with Roarke about those cameras.”
“Dismissed.”
“Dallas your really going to put cameras in your office?”
“Yes, I am going to put cameras in my office. By the that little piece of information stays between us. If it gets out about the cameras we could loose the best shot of catching this guy.”
“Okay.”
Once they arrived back at the homicide division Eve went into her office to call Roarke to arrange for the cameras to be installed. Once they had arrived Eve made her way to her office to make the call. “Caro, is Roarke available?”
“Not, right now maybe in a half an hour or so. Is this an emergency Eve?”
“No. Tell me this Caro how many more meetings does he have for the day?”
“Actually, this is the last meeting of the day.”
“Okay, can you get a message to him for me. I need him to get four of the smallest cameras that he can. I then need for him to come down here.”
“Certainly, Eve. May I ask what you need the cameras for.”
“You can ask but I can’t tell you anything.”
“I see. I’ll let Roarke know. I hope these cameras help in your case.”
An hour later Roarke arrived with the desired cameras. “Okay, I brought the cameras what are we doing with them.”
“I need them installed around my office.”
“For the candy thief Darling Eve?”
“No for my current case, my killer is hand delivering postcards to my desk. Don Webster suggested putting eyes in my office.
Commander Whitney agreed that is should do this but it would be to hard on the budget to put them in and out. The feed needs to go to Feeney I also want it to go to my machine.”
“Okay, I’ll get the cameras installed. In return for my service I want dinner and after this case I want a long weekend on our island.”
She pretended to think on this and then said “Deal.”

But who wants to put money down that the killer will have a jammer just in case
