Eve had taken her search back to her home office, where Summerset was waiting for her. He took her jacket as he always did and all Eve could do was shake her head. She didn’t know what she was supposed to say to him. They were going into thirteen hours without a ransom demand. If Roarke were being held for ransom, the call would have come through within the first few hours of the kidnapping. More than that, the message Eve left on Roarke’s link had gone unanswered.
Eve grabbed a cup of coffee from her auto chef and brought her home computer to life. Galahad sauntered in and jumped up on Eve’s sleep couch. He turned a circle in the chair, yawned, and curled into a ball.
“I’m glad one of us can sleep,” Eve muttered as she watched her cat doing his nightly rituals. “Roarke was kidnapped, Galahad. He went to work this morning and was in a car accident. Someone caused the accident and I don’t know who has him.”
Galahad didn’t even feign interest.
The call came in to her personal link while she was working on her comp. It was Lea Pastor and somehow she had Eve’s link number. Funny, she didn’t remember giving it to her. Then again, she could have gotten it from Commander Whitney. With that thinking, Eve answered. “Detective Pastor. Any news?”
Lea’s face came on screen, a little less shiny than thirteen hours ago. “I found the two MT’s that answered your husband’s accident call. They’re calling for a lawyer right now. Want me to wait on you?”
Eve stood and grabbed her jacket. “I’m on my way.”
Eve grabbed her shoes as she started out of her office and pushed them on her feet as she hobbled to the steps. Her jacket was nowhere in sight so Eve went to her vehicle without it. As Eve pulled out of the gates, she tagged Peabody.
There was no visual, but even in audio, Eve could tell she had woken Peabody from sleep or something else she’d rather not think about. “What is it, Dallas?”
“Get dressed. I’m on my way to pick you up. I need you to sit in with Detective Pastor while she interviews the two MT’s that kidnapped Roarke.”
“They found them?” Suddenly, audio went to visual and Peabody appeared. “Where?”
“I’m not sure. I’m headed into Central, but I can’t be in the interview room. You can. Help me, Peabody.”
“I’ll be waiting.” And with that, Peabody disconnected the transmission.
True to what she said, Peabody was on the sidewalk when Eve pulled up. It still gave Eve a sick stomach to see Peabody standing outside of her apartment building and know that last year in the same spot, Delia Peabody was beaten within an inch of her life. Thankfully, she made it through with no physical or emotional impairments.
“What do we know about them?” Peabody asked as they sailed through light traffic to Cop Central.
Eve shook her head.
“Okay. Then let me fill you in on Detective Lea Pastor. She’s good, Dallas. I mean, she’s Eve Dallas good. Roarke deserves the best, right?” Peabody asked. “Well, in Missing Persons, Lea Pastor is the best.”
News crews outlined the front of Cop Central. Eve slipped into the underground garage and used the elevator. She tagged Pastor before they entered the metal box and when the doors opened to Missing Persons, Lea Pastor was waiting for them.
“I have them in Interview room D with their lawyer,” Lea told them as they walked. “They opted to go with the same lawyer. Might be the second stupidest move they made, but they opted for one lawyer.”
Pastor opened the door to Observation room D and opened a metal chair. Eve didn’t glance at the chair because she was too focused on the men in the interview room. They didn’t look like kidnappers, but then her father didn’t look like a baby rapist when she saw his picture either.
“Do you mind if Detective Peabody sits in? She’s been involved in this since Roarke disappeared. She has unique eyes and can read people pretty well.”
Eve didn’t see the swell of pride in Peabody’s face or in her demeanor, but she felt the change in the room like an increase in temperature.
Eve heard Detective Pastor say, “I’ve heard of your unique friendship with Roarke, Detective. If you hinder my interview, I will make you leave.”
“I won’t,” Peabody answered. “Do you need anything, Dallas?”
“Find Roarke, Peabody, and then bury them in the deepest hole.”
Peabody nodded and walked out behind Pastor. Eve kept the intercom off as Pastor and Peabody entered the interview room seconds after leaving the observation room. Eve saw the recognition in the faces of the two MT’s as Peabody’s name and division was announced for the tape.
She turned the intercom on and took a seat at the metal fold up chair Pastor had arranged for her to have. “Game on,” She whispered as Pastor started the interview.
