Redux in Death---Chapter Two

An ambulance blocked the emergency entrance of The Drake so Peabody parked in the fire lane and both of them got out of the car. Eve rushed into the emergency room to be greeted by a harried Louise. She was wearing a blue smock with traces of blood on it and thick safety glasses hung from a strap around her neck.

“He’s not here,” Louise said first before Eve could form any words. The blood on Louise’s smock stopped her tongue from forming any words.

“We saw the ambulance,” Peabody clarified. “It had to be Roarke.”

“It wasn’t Roarke. It was a thirty-five year old male who went head to head with mugger, but it wasn’t Roarke.” Louise was eyeing Eve.

“Then where is he, Louise?” Finally able to form words, Eve asked the question.

“I’m checking with hospitals in the area to see if they were diverted.” Someone called her name from behind the ER door. “I have to go, Dallas. Check with Polly at the front desk about the other hospitals.” Louise donned the thick safety glasses and ran back through the door.

Polly was a middle-aged woman with flaming red hair piled on top of her head and black glasses. Her fingers were flying on the keyboard, only stopping to answer the phone. When Eve and Peabody approached the desk, Eve slapped her badge down hard. Polly stopped her typing and looked up. “Lieutenant Dallas, Doctor Dimatto said you would be coming to see me.” She pulled a piece of paper from the printer and handed it to Eve. “This is a list of hospitals that your husband would have been taken to and no one has reported him being brought in. It’s like he’s vanished.”

“Captain Ryan Feeney of NYPSD saw him being loaded into an ambulance at the crash site. How does an ambulance just disappear?”

Polly shook her head. “Doctor Dimatto asked me to check the remaining hospitals on this list for her and none of them have admitted your husband.”

Eve shoved the paper in her pocket and sighed with exasperation. “Where are the MT’s that brought in the mugging victim?”

Polly pointed behind her and Eve saw the ambulance they passed coming in was still outside. This time two men were climbing into the back. Eve darted outside and showed her badge to the MT she caught climbing into the ambulance last.

“I’m Lieutenant Eve Dallas with NYPSD.” She looked both men in the eye and felt like she knew the younger one. “I need your names.”

The older man with pale green eyes said, “Karl Atkins.” He pointed to the younger man with him. The one Eve thought looked familiar to her. “He’s Miles D’Cruz. What’s this about?”

Eve’s eyes darted between them. She pulled out a picture of Roarke and handed it to them. “Did you pick up this man in your ambulance at any time today?”

Karl Atkins shook his head and handed Eve her picture. “No, ma’am. Our first pick-up of the day was the mugging victim. I’m sorry.”

“How many ambulances went out this morning on calls?” Peabody asked.

Karl shook his head again. “You would have to check with dispatch on that. We responded to the call at eight-forty five.” He glanced at his watch. “It’s nine-thirty now.”

“Thanks.” Peabody said. Eve was still glancing at D’Cruz. She knew him. She knew him.

Peabody touched Eve’s jacket at the elbow. “Dallas, we have to go.”

Eve shook her partner’s hand off the jacket. “I know you, don’t I?” She asked the younger man. “You seem familiar.”

The younger man gulped and Eve could have sworn turned white. “Yes, ma’am. I was one of two MT’s that took care of you two years ago when you went head to head with the kid on the board.” He gulped again. “I was the one that gave you the tranq. It was my first day.”

Eve nodded and followed Peabody back to the car.

    “Accident scene?”

Before Eve could say yes, she saw Summerset walking into the ER. “Crap, I forgot. Stay here,” She got out of the car and jogged into the ER. Summerset was at the desk with Polly.

“Scarecrow!” Eve shouted. Summerset turned on cue and Eve stopped in front of him. “He’s not here,” Eve said. “I don’t know where he is.”

“You lost Roarke,” He stated simply.

Eve’s temper flared. “I didn’t lose him. I---I’m headed to the accident scene. If you want to stay here, be my guest. If not, go home and I’ll call you when I know something.”

    Summerset didn’t answer her.

“Fine,” She said throwing her arms in the air. “I’ll call you.”

Peabody had pulled up closer to the entrance and Eve got into the vehicle. “To the accident scene,” Eve said.
