Chapter 11

Posted by Crimegirl , 29 September 2012 · 516 views

Lifeless eyes stared up at Dr Charlotte Mira, and she felt grief tug at her heart.

A moment was all it took, to take a life. To destroy someone else’s.

But as she knew, there was more than one way to destroy a life.

She stared into the glazed over eyes of David Houston, and knew that he’d just destroyed his sister’s.

“Oh, god. God, I killed him. I killed my brother.” Eve heaved and scrambled away on her hands and knees, supported by Mira’s arm. Tears ran down her cheeks as sirens wailed in the air, and she felt Mira’s arms come around her.

“Roarke. I need Roarke.” She gasped out and Mira smoothed back her hair.

“He’s coming.” She promised, and felt Eve lean into her.

“Eve!?” Roarke bolted towards where she sat on the ground with Mira after what seemed like an eternity. She scrambled up and flew into his arms, clinging tightly.

“I killed him. I killed him.” She whispered into his shoulder.

Roarke gazed at the man lying on the ground, and felt a zing of confusion. But Whitney strode onto the scene before he could speak, and nodded at him.

“Take her home, Roarke.” He scooped Eve up in his arms immediately, ignoring her weak protests and the stares of the uniforms.

“Roarke?” Mira called as she caught up to them. “Do you mind if I…” she gestured to Eve, and at his nod slid into the car after them.

“Roarke?! Is she hurt?” Summerset hurried down the steps to them as they arrived home, but Roarke merely shook his head as he wrapped his arms around her shoulders.

“Aunt Eve? What’s wrong?” Evelyna started down the stairs, pale and unsteady. Eve drew a sharp breathe as she looked up at her, guilt and grief clogging her throat.

“Aunt Eve?” Evelyna stopped, staring at her in fear.

“Aunt Eve!” Silence echoed and slowly Evelyna sat down. “Where’s my dad?” her voice was soft, but she never took her eyes off Eve. When she got no answer, she began to shake her head.

“No! Where is he? Where’s my dad?!” her voice rose and tears ran down her cheeks as she stood up, hands fisting at her side. Her eyes bored into Eve’s, begging.  “Please.” She whispered. “Please please please. Not him too. Please.”

“I’m so sorry. So, so sorry.” Said Eve as tears ran down her cheeks. The girl collapsed, gripping the railing beside her.

“No! It’s not fair! Why him? Why him too!?” she screamed. Eve made her way up to the girl, who suddenly looked a lot younger. She wrapped her arms around her, and the young girl sobbed into her shoulder, clutching tightly at Eve’s jumper.

They stayed like that for an age, until the teen pulled away, eyes gazing down the steps at her younger sister, who had found her way into Mira’s arms.

“What are we going to do?” she murmured. Then woke up a little, an alertness coming into her eyes. “How? How did he die?” Her voice caught at the last word, and Eve swallowed thickly.

“I… I stunned him. On full.” Evelyna’s head whipped round at that.

“What?!”

“He held a gun to me. I pulled the trigger before I saw who it was.” Eve shuddered, pressing her hands to her stomach.

“A… a gun? What?” Evelyna looked at her directly, and Eve saw the vulnerability and despair in her eyes. As well as the complete and utter grief.  And for the first time, she thought she understood a mother’s love. Because in that moment, she realised, in a child of her own she would have given the world to take that look away.

“I don’t know. I’m sorry.”

“A gun. Oh god… I didn’t ever think-” she cut off, staring into space, horrified.

“Didn’t ever think what?” Eve said sharply.

“I.. He… Oh my god. He’s… been acting strange. Like he was in a daze, and he’d come out of it in a raging fury. He’d throw things, and hit walls. Then, he… he hit mum. And this morning, he…” she stopped, tears leaving trails down her cheeks.

“He what, sweetheart?” Eve spoke gently.

“He pushed me.” She whispered as she closed her eyes. “He pushed me.”

Eve drew in a breath, placing an arm around her shoulders as her eyes met Roarke's.  His looked as troubled as she felt.

Mira and Summerset took the kids upstairs as Roarke and Eve went into her office.

“What?” she snapped as his eyes bore holes into her back.

“O, really. You didn’t see this coming?” he raised a disbelieving eyebrow.

“WHAT?”

“O. You actually didn’t.” sighed Roarke.

“What! You’re seriously expecting me to believe you knew this was going to happen?” yelled Eve furiously.

“Oh, please Eve. You don’t think that him showing up just after his partner’s death is just a little too convenient? That he claims he had no idea she was coming to see you, despite the fact they lived off planet and it wasn’t just a trip down the road? And the fact that we never said why Keely was in New York, but apparently he knows she was coming to see you. But he didn’t know about it.”

The Irish in his voice got more pronounced and his eyes flashed furiously. Eve shook her head.

“No! It… Roarke you’re wrong. You have to be.” She shouted.

“Why do I? Hmm?” he shouted right back.

“Because then I have nothing! Because then every good memory I have is tainted! If they aren’t already! Because if you’re right, then it was all a lie and I can’t bear that!” she screamed. They stared at each other, breathing heavily.

“It wasn’t right Eve. And you would see that if you weren’t so close.” Roarke said softly.

“What the hell is wrong Roarke!? Why didn’t you like David? You’re angry, but I didn’t do anything!” Roarke blinked.

“You think this is because of you? He doesn’t see you in years, but he comes back and you welcome him with open arms. I had to fight tooth and claw to get close to you, but you just let him in like it was nothing!”

“I… you’re jealous?” Eve said surprised. “For god’s sake Roarke, he’s my brother! Of course I forgave him- he earned my love a long time ago.”

Roarke spun.

“Is that what it is? You have to earn the right to get close to precious Eve Dallas? You have to earn her love… make sure you’re worthy. Is that it, Eve?” he advanced on her, and she shut down the flicker of hurt inside her.

“Don’t be ridiculous. That’s not what I said.” Pressed against the wall, she couldn’t escape and he pinned her with both arms either side, his body pressed against hers.

“Isn’t it?” he whispered. He took possession of her mouth, hard and fast.

“Isn’t it Eve?” he demanded as her head spun. He kissed her again, deep and probing. He pulled away, trapping her so that only her head could move.

“Roarke…” she whispered.

“I earned it Eve. A long time ago.” His mouth plundered hers, left her gasping.

“You’re mine.” He took control of her mouth again.

“Say it.” He demanded.

“Yours. Always yours.” Eve whispered, and she kissed him back, tongue searching. She felt that familiar heat rush through her, and pressed against him, frantically fighting the cage of his body as she struggled to touch him.

“Make me forget.” She pleaded between kisses. “Make me forget. Please.”

He swept her into his arms, carried her to the bedroom. And did just that.

Hey!! Sorry it took so long to update- I caught a virus that wiped me out. Thank you all so much for your comments but it'll probably be a little while before I can update again. Thanks again!!! X

I can't believe she killed him! Does she have to go through testing, or will Mira get her out of it? What will happen to the kids? What do you mean you aren't going to update in a while! AHHHHHH

Totally love where this is going! I hope it isn't too long before you update again!! I'm not sure I can wait that long!

What the heck happened to him? What did Roarke see or sense in him that Eve missed? I can't wait to read more!
  • Report
Perhaps it was because Roarke was on the outside that he saw something wasn't right with David.
