“Peabody, what have you got so far?” Eve asked as she stepped in.
“Not much. David and Keely’s lives were simple, with no enemies as far as we can tell. But we’re still working on their pasts- old foster siblings or schoolmates. David told us there was a lot of bullying at school, so we’re working on that angle; see if someone carried on through the years. Feeney and McNab are working that, and Baxter and Trueheart are still canvassing. ”
“Lieutenant, have you considered that this may be a personal attack on you? You were family after all.” Whitney spoke up, his eyes carefully blank.
“I did, but I haven’t spoken or seen her in years. In fact, if it weren’t for the fact she was in my patch I would call it coincidental.”
“No such thing as coincidence.” Peabody murmured, earning an elbow poke from Eve.
“Ha. You taught her well kid.” Feeney’s voice came from the doorway, and he was closely followed by most of his and Eve’s detective’s as well as Mira, who came to greet Eve with a look of concern.
“Are you OK? Summerset called, said you had the worst nightmare he’d seen.” She asked quietly. Eve scowled.
“That old tattletale. I’m… not ok. But I will be.” On a whim, she hugged Mira, still not completely settled after her nightmare. Surprised, Mira hugged her back, making a mental note to talk to Roarke.
“What’re you all doing here?” asked Peabody with a grin.
“S’called showing support.” Said Baxter. Eve opened her mouth, but before she could speak Mavis flew into the room and tackled her in a fierce hug.
“Dallas!”
“Hey Mavis.” Smiled Eve. “Hey Leonardo, Belle.” She added as she caught sight of them in the doorway.
“Are you ok?” she demanded, causing Eve to roll her eyes.
“Jeez, I’m fine.” Even as she spoke, a scream echoed throughout the house, causing Eve’s heart to stutter as she recognised Joya’s voice.
She raced out the room, caught sight of Summerset ahead of her. Racing down the corridor, her heart jumped to her throat as she saw Evelyna lay at the bottom of the stairs in a pool of blood.
“Eve!” she heard David’s cry behind her, and a child’s sobbing.
“She has a pulse.” Said Summerset and she breathed a sigh of relief. “Just unconscious.”
At this, Eve turned to Joya, who was huddled in a ball in the corner.
“Joya? Joya, what happened?” she asked gently, holding out her arms.
“The bad man.” The girl sniffed out as she curled against Eve.
“The bad man?” baffled, Eve glanced at David, who just looked confused.
“Who, honey?” Roarke knelt beside them, stroking the little girl’s hair.
“The bad man. He scary. He hurt Lina.”
“Lina?” Even more confused, Eve looked at David for help.
“She means Evelyna.” Joya shrieked at the sound of his voice, and he frowned slightly, but picked Eve up, taking her upstairs.
As Summerset provided medical care and watched over her, Whitney set everyone back to work. They split to try and find out how someone could have infiltrated the house, and Eve made her way into central, relishing the polluted air and noise of New York City as it settled her shredded nerves.
“EVE!” She heard a voice screaming as she approached central, and turned to see Mira, a look of horror on her face. She reached for her weapon instinctively, but found herself staring at the barrel of a gun.
Somebody screamed, somebody shot… and somebody died.
Eve fell to the floor.
