Chapter 6

As they left Peabody, Roarke decided that now was probably a good time for Eve to go visit Doctor Mira.

“A Ghra, I have to go to the office… I’ll pick you up at the end of shift?” Roarke stopped outside Mira’s office, catching Eve’s hand in his. She nodded and he squeezed her hand, quashing the worry he felt at her pale appearance.

“Roarke…?” she called as he began to walk away. He turned and gave her that brilliant smile that made her heart stutter and ache. She walked the few steps towards him and pressed a gentle kiss to his lips.

“Tá grá agam duit.”

For once, it was Roarke speechless. The smile grew over Eve’s face and she kissed him again, before turning and walking into Mira’s office, leaving him standing shell shocked.

Mira’s office was open, and she walked straight through at the nod of her assistant. She knocked softly, and Mira looked up with a smile.

“Eve. Come on in.” She rose, and took both Eve’s hand in hers, kissing her forehead gently.

“Peabody filled me in. But I want you to tell me.”

After Eve had finished her story, she sat for a few moments silently.

“How are you doing, Eve?” she asked, amused at the surprised expression that formed on the cop’s face.

“I… beat up a sparring droid.” She admitted, causing Mira to let out a laugh.

“I suppose that’s understandable.”

“And then I jumped Roarke. Or rather, he jumped me. But the outcome was the same.” Mira opened her mouth, then closed it again.

“Okaaay…” she managed.

“But I didn’t have any nightmares, which was surprising.” Eve blinked slightly, realising just how much she’d revealed without additional prompting.

“You were expecting one?” asked Mira, hoping to distract Eve from her sudden discomfort.

“When my past comes up I usually get one. So yeah, I was expecting one.” Eve gave a lopsided grin that was eerily similar to Roarke’s. “Not that I’m complaining.”

“I imagine not. So… if you haven’t had nightmares, what is it that’s bothering you?”

Eve nodded. “Do you think… do you think I’m to blame for Keely’s death?” she asked with hesitation.

“What? No- eve, whatever gave you that idea?”

“Peabody was saying how you think her murder’s connected to me. Is it my fault, Mira?” with a shock, Mira realized this was one of the most vulnerable she’d seen Eve. She moved next to her, taking her hands.

“Eve, listen to me. This is not your fault. The person who killed her- it’s their fault. You’re not to blame.”

“But I am!” Eve cried out, looking up at Mira instead of her lap. “She was my sister! She… she saved me, Mira! Roarke may have healed me, but she saved me. She and David. And I couldn’t help her or her baby!”

Tears shone in her eyes, and Mira forgot all her training. She wrapped her arms around Eve, rocking her gently and murmuring to her.

“You are not to blame, Eve. This is not your fault, and if she were here I’d bet she’d tell you the same.”

Eve shook in her arms, clinging to her as she cried silently. After a while, the sobs subsided, and Mira pulled back slightly cupping Eve’s face in her hand.

“This is not your fault.” She repeated firmly, her heart aching as she saw the tears on Eve’s cheeks. Eve nodded slightly, attempting to pull back from Mira, who stood and pulled Eve to her feet.

“Come on- I’ll drive you home.”

“No… I have to-”

“rest.” Mira cut Eve off before she could finish her protest. “I mean it Eve, and if I have to call Roarke I will.”

Eve nodded, and followed Mira out of her office.

“I spoke Irish to him.” She grinned.

“Hmm?”

“Roarke. I learnt to say I love you in Irish. Shocked the hell out of him. Makes a change- it’s normally the other way round.”

Mira laughed at that. “Are you learning fluently?”

“Attempting to. I’ll probably just end up learning the important and really unimportant bits.”

They drove to Roarke’s mansion, talking about mundane, everyday things. Mira came in with her, both laughing even as Summerset appeared in front of them.

“Jeez scarecrow, couldn’t find anywhere else to haunt for the day?” When he didn’t sneer or comeback at her, she frowned.

“What happened… is it Roarke?” she asked, even as her heart pounded and at the same time rebelled. She would know… wouldn’t she?

“Nothing’s wrong with Roarke.” Summerset quickly assured her, slightly concerned as she became instantly pale. “He’s through there.”

He gestured to the parlour, and Eve frowned, entering it.

“Roarke? What’s up with the walking de...?” her words faded as she stared at the two men on the couch before her. Both rose at once, but for the first time it wasn’t Roarke that captured her attention.

Memories flashed, but she shoved them away as she stared at the sandy haired man in front of her.

“David?”
