“Hey Dallas, Roarke!” Peabody bounced up to them, a smile on her face which quickly fell away as she noticed her superiors glare.
“You had sex this morning didn’t you?” Eve asked her. She raised a hand and cut off Peabody's stutters, instead demanding an update on the case.
“Well, we’ve been trying to locate David and the baby, but we can’t find any records of them after they ran away from the foster home. Feeney’s on it, but he says it doesn’t look good.” She paused as Eve walked over to the window, staring out at the raging storm and the strangely empty streets.
“Has he tried family?”
Peabody glanced at Roarke, but continued. “Yes, Keely Johnson’s parents were barred from all contact with her and no aunts or uncles. She did have a grandmother, but she’s sick and hasn’t seen Keely since she was a child. No other family that we could track down on either of them.”
Eve shook her head. “David was like me- found in an alley with no records of existing. Except he was a baby and was found in Houston.”
“His last name?” queried Peabody.
“Told ya- like me.”
Instantly she was transported back to that foster home- blurry memories of arriving and meeting her new roommate, Keely, and the cries of young boys play fighting down the hall. And of David grinning at her across the table and making suggestive comments with an easy grin on his face. Of staying up late into the night and sharing stories, the three of them falling deadly silent every time a sound was made from Belinda’s bedroom.
“Come on Evie! It’ll be fun!” Keely grinned at her, already crouched on the window sill.
“If you say so…” Eve jumped out after her friend, landing gracefully.
“Evenin’ ladies. Fancy meetin’ you here.” In an exaggerated southern drawl, David rounded the corner of the house, chewing his ever-present gum.
“Come on, douche head. We have a party to get to!” Keely darted off down the street, dancing carelessly to a song only she knew. They youngest of the three, she had an amazing ability to push aside the bad stuff and concentrate on the good.
“You think we should get her drug tested?” mused David.
“Keely? Nah, she’s only addicted to caffeine. A lot of it.” Answered Eve with a smile.
“Oh… bit like someone else I know!” David laughed, poking her in the ribs. A tickle fight ensued, with Keely joining in and their laughter echoing up and down the empty road.
“Dallas? You ok?” asked Peabody.
“Yeah. Anything else?”
“Not really. We’re working with the assumption that whoever killed her dumped her in the storm thinking she wouldn’t be found until it passed. But, if they’d done their research they would have found out that the airport routinely clears its runways even in bad weather, just in case of emergency flights.”
“So we’re dealing with a mildly intelligent, unprepared idiot. COD?”
“Exsanguination due to multiple stab wounds to the torso. Morris sends his condolences, by the way. ”
Eve nodded, her thoughts forming a picture of their suspect.
“It was personal. Enraged. He knew her, and she him. She trusted him- she was streetwise, and a survivor. She wouldn’t have just gone with him… any witnesses?” she asked suddenly.
“None. Everyone was taking shelter from the storm. But… we think this may be directed at you.” Peabody shifted uncomfortably as Eve’s whipped round.
“What?! Why? And who’s we?” she snapped out, before sighing and apologizing softly.
“Er… doctor Mira and I. She says to go see her ASAP, too. She was in your patch Dallas, in you city. What’re the chances of that? So we think it’s directed to you. Maybe.” Eve shook her head slowly.
“No… no that’s good Peabody. I should’ve seen it earlier- she hated big cities and there’s no such thing as coincidence. She was probably here because of me.” She looked up, and Roarke could see the anguish in her eyes.
“Is she dead because of me? Did I get my little sister killed?”
Hi everyone!! Thanks so much for your comments- updates are probably going to be a while from now on as I moved house and our internet provider can't connect us to the broadband till the end of September. I'll try to do some at school, but otherwise... sorry!!! X
