Lieutenant Eve Dallas had decided she hated the rain. Almost 2 weeks after the first storm, it still hadn’t stopped raining and she was at her wits end. With stir crazy detectives and a shortage of fresh murders, she was stuck reviewing cold cases until the storms died down and the electricity came back up.
“Yo, Dallas.” Baxter leant against the door, sucking a tube of orange fizzy.
“Yeah?”
“Got a fresh one. NY airport.” He said jiggling a little.
“What, you need a babysitter now?” Eve snapped at him.
“Peabody’s there waiting for you. Said she tried to tag you but you didn’t answer.”
“Crap. I turned it off. Got tired of the prank calls I was getting from you guys.” She glared at him, and he widened his eyes innocently.
“Wasn’t me ma!” he dodged the pen that was thrown at him and zipped away, leaving Eve to battle her way through the winds to the airport.
The rain pelted down, instantly drenching her as the wind whipped her short hair about her face.
“Peabody! You better have a damn good reason for dragging me down here!” she shouted over the wind, suppressing amusement at the sight of her partner. Bundled in a thick coat and gloves with a scarf and hat covering her face until only her eyes were visible, the detective looked like some kind of mutant eskimo.
Peabody said something that was snatched by the wind, and Eve shook her head, pointing to her ears. Peabody stepped closer until her mouth was at Dallas’s ear.
“She had a picture of the pair of you together along with a man!” Dallas frowned and made her way over to the body, waving absently to Morris, who was crouching next to the body. Without her asking, he turned the dead woman over so Dallas could see her face.
She swayed, staring into the unseeing eyes of the woman. Peabody touched her arm gently, and she swallowed thickly, shaking her head. Before she could stop them memories invaded her mind. Memories of summers laughing in the sweltering heat, and studying together late at night for finals. Of chasing each other barefoot down the street, teasing about boys and wistfully hoping for that first love. Of arms holding her in the deadest hour of the night when the nightmares got so bad she couldn’t even scream. And most of all, the overwhelming grief when it had all been taken from her.
The body was whisked away before the rain could destroy more evidence as Dallas stood frozen, her face pale in the darkness of the storm. Peabody gripped her shoulder, trying to wipe away the glazed look in her partners’ eyes. Dallas blinked and came to, her breath coming in short gasps. Peabody frowned at her, worried, leading her away towards the cars. But not before tagging Roarke and telling him to come to central.
