Chapter One

Lieutenant Eve Dallas was laughing. It felt good to laugh, and the last few days had held a good amount of laughter for her. But this? This was the best laugh yet!

Sitting across from her in the ratty visitors chair, Detective David Baxter was not laughing. He looked very much unlike the Detective Baxter she knew with his slightly messy hair, loosened tie and without a sports jacket.

And it made her laugh.

"Come on, Detective, your ego is bigger than that," Eve laughed again, "Baxter, your aide is 100% ready for this exam, but he's not going to go in there and show you up. He's going to do his best and make you proud."

Baxter sighed and rubbed his sleepy eyes, "He's just been stressing over this exam, which stresses me out and makes me have these weird dreams."

Eve rolled her eyes, "Don't think I can't relate. My former aide-current partner and usual pain in the ass- made me want to choke her. Geez, talk about stress."

"Did you have dreams that she wouldn't pass and would turn into some angry angsty uniform that hates life? Or that she'd pass but believe she'd passed because you'd fixed it for her so then she'd resent you not believing she could do it? Or that-"

"God Baxter, get a hold of yourself! No I didn't have dreams like that! Jesus, do you suddenly think he's not ready?"

"No," Baxter shook his head, "I don't know what's with the dreams. I know he's ready, but maybe I'm not."

Eve raised an eyebrow, "Not ready for Trueheart to be a detective? Or not ready to give up having an aide?"

"I don't know. Maybe both. He's like a little brother, you know? And then they grow up and go away to college or something like that?"

Now she rolled her eyes, "Seriously, Baxter? You know I'll keep him assigned to this department. The two of you can become official partners. It's not like you weren't already before."

"But is that what aides and trainers are supposed to do?" Baxter questioned, "Are you doing that because that's what you did with Peabody?"

Eve sighed, "The two of you work well together. No matter what comes out of that test this morning, it's not going to affect that partnership. Trueheart's promotion is not going to change anything except give him what he's been working for. Yeah, you should probably not dump shitwork on him all the time, but you'll still be senior in the partnership."

Baxter thought for a moment, then looked at Eve, "When did you decide that's what you wanted?"

"That what's what I wanted?"

"To make Peabody your partner?"

Frowning, Eve picked up her coffee, "It just kind of happened, I guess. I never wanted a partner, definitely never wanted to train a uniform. I guess we just sort of, clicked. I mean, she was a bit annoying at first," she gave Baxter a small smile when he laughed, "But she was a good cop, you know. More seasoned than Trueheart was when I passed him to you, but there were rookie habits I had to eliminate, purities I had to shatter, and at some point down the line, I just knew. We get each other, we work well together. I never thought I'd have that again after Feeney moved up, but there you go."

Baxter nodded, "I guess you're still training her now, right?"

Shrugging, Eve took another sip of coffee, "In a way. She's come a long way in two years. But yeah, she's still growing. So no, Baxter, you don't have to worry that suddenly Trueheart will know everything and go off on his own."

Baxter was quiet for a moment, then gave his Lieutenant a smile, "Thanks Dallas. Maybe this little chat will help get rid of the weird dreams."

Eve laughed, "They should stop when you know how he does on the text, which," she glanced at her wrist unit, "doesn't end for a few hours. So relax, drink some coffee and go get some work done."

He stood, offered his hand, "Thank you, Dallas." She stood too, completed the offered handshake.

"Anytime Detective. Now get out of my office, I have things to do."

He grinned now as he slipped out of the room and closed the door behind him.

The dreams had started a few days earlier. With the stress that was Trueheart stressing, on top of an entire day of court testimonies the day before, the annual NYPSD softball tournament two days earlier and the long weekend ahead that would be less relaxing and more family craziness, he could have really used that beer he'd had in his last dream.

Aww! Baxter is over protective of his trainee! I get it now that the beginning was one of his dreams! Awesome stuff!
