Present in Death

Chapter 4

Eve was waiting outside Central when Roarke pulled up. He got out and moved to her. He was surprised when Eve moved into his arms and kissed him. When she pulled away, he caught something in her whiskey orbs.

“Eve, what is it?”

“Not here. Let’s go home.” As they headed for the car she paused. “On second thought, let’s go out for dinner, then home.”

Now he was curious. “Alright. What are you in the mood for?”

Eve slid into the car and Roarke followed her. “Somewhere quiet.”

“I know the perfect place.” He replied, trying to hide his worry.

As they drove through the city, Eve reached over and took his hand. She had hid now rattled she was when Webster had contacted her. Now, she felt those nerves coming back. All day she worried about telling Roarke. She feared his guilt would come back and once again, because of Barrow she could lose him. This time for good. She looked over when squeezed her hand.

The restaurant he chose was quiet and very exclusive. They were led to a private table and after Roarke ordered a bottle of Eve’s favorite wine, the waitress left them to look over the menu.

“Talk to me Eve. What is it?” Roarke asked.

“Roarke, I will. But right now let’s just pretend it’s only us. No work, just you and me. Please.” Eve sighed.

Whatever it was, had his darling Eve scared. “Alright Eve. It can wait.”

“Thanks. So, I hear from Mira that Lori’s doing well.”

“Yeah. A little bird told me that Terry is becoming quite the lab tech.” Roarke replied.

Eve nodded as she sipped her wine. “I have a feeling he’ll be better than Dickhead in a few years.”

******************************************************************************

Eve felt the relaxation of dinner wear off as they drove through the gates. Now she couldn’t put it off. When she told Whitney she would tell Roarke, she was told to bring him in officially as an expert civilian consultant.

“A ghrá, are you alright?” Roarke asked when they climbed out of the car.

“No, I’m not. Come on. I’ll explain in my office.” Eve answered.

Summerset met them in the foyer. “You have a package Captain. I put it in your office.”

Her blood ran cold. “When did it arrive and how?”

“Twenty minutes ago via messenger droid.” Summerset responded in surprise as her voice shook.

“Hey you two.” Lori greeted as she and Terry exited the parlor. “How was dinner…” Eve bolted up the stairs. “out. Dad, what’s going on?”

“I don’t know Lori.” Roarke answered before following Eve.

Eve found the envelope on her desk. She grabbed a can of Seal-it from her bag and coated her hands. Summerset’s prints would be explained since he signed for the package. The receipt sat next to the envelope.

Carefully she opened the envelope and tapped the contents onto her desk. It was a letter and half a dozen pictures. She looked down at the pictures and felt her body shudder. They were of her and Roarke. Once of her kissing him when he picked her up at Central. The rest were of them at the restaurant. Cursing she picked up the letter.

Eve,

You looked quite beautiful tonight surrounded in candlelight. The only thing wrong with these pictures is the man sitting across from you.

When will you see he’ll only bring you pain? No matter, you’ll come to see true freedom soon enough. I’ll show you that freedom.

Until we meet again.

“Mom, what is it?” Lori questioned as she, Roarke, and Terry entered the office.

“Lori, call Feeney. Tell him…” Eve took a shaky breath. “tell him there’s been contact again.”

Lori saw the fear in Eve’s eyes. She grabbed Terry’s hand and pulled him from the room. Eve looked at Roarke. She opened her mouth to say something, anything, but all that came out was a whimper. Roarke pulled her to him and held her tightly in his arms.

“It’s alright a ghrá. It’s going to be alright.” He whispered soothingly.

“It’s…Webster.” She breathed.

“What?”

“Webster. He called me at…Central. He’s the one who sent these.”

Roarke looked at the pictures. Seeing him and Eve in those pictures, and reading the letter left his blood boiling. He cupped Eve’s face and kissed her softly. “Eve, I promise he won’t hurt you.”

“But…what about you?”

Then Roarke realized what really had Eve scared. It wasn’t Webster stalking her, but the guilt Roarke had been dealing with for a year. He pulled Eve to her sleep chair and eased her into it. He then knelt between her legs and held her hands.

“Darling Eve, I understand now. Do I still feel guilt over what happened last year? Yes. It’s hard not to when I promised you I could come for you and I was too late. Will I leave you again because of that? Never. I tried to leave and even before you brought me home, I was fighting to stay away.” He said.

Eve leaned forward and pressed her forehead to his. “I don’t want to lose you again.”

Roarke pressed his lips to hers. “You won’t. Eve, I’m sticking.”

“Glad to hear that boyo.”

Eve and Roarke looked up. Feeney, Tibble and Whitney at the door. “Sorry to interrupt Dallas, but Lori sounded worried so I brought backup. Plus the three of us were headed here anyway.”

Eve smiled. “It’s fine Feeney.”

“Now, am I expert…civilian on this?” Roarke asked with a wink at Eve.

Eve’s smile widened even as she rolled her eyes. “Yeah. Whitney’s orders.”

Whitney and Tibble shared a relieved look. Both had been a little concerned at bringing Roarke in. Feeney however had told them that Roarke would stand by Eve and would definitely come on board. With or without permission.

“Well, perhaps we should fill you in Roarke. I believe Dallas has a theory to what’s going on.” Tibble stated.

T.B.C

Maybe it's time Roarke and Webster had another mano y mano discussion.

Is Webster crazy now, or is he still suffering the affects of what Barrow did to him?
