Eve took long enough at the front desk to inquire about Doctor Mira’s new room number. It wasn’t visiting hours yet, but Eve didn’t care. She flashed her badge at the third floor nurse’s station and didn’t stop until she was at Doctor Mira’s hospital room.
A quiet ‘come in’ was accepted for the brief knock Eve gave to the hardwood door. Doctor Mira was sitting up in bed flipping through a magazine. Her breakfast tray was pushed away from her bed, the contents half eaten.
“Dennis is bringing me some breakfast,” Mira explained when Eve’s gaze went noticed. Eve took in the two flower arrangements on the cabinet. One was a plant while the other was a crystal vase filled with orchids.
“The plant is from my assistant and the orchids are from Roarke.” Mira explained, yet again. “You can read the card if you like.”
“He’s mad at me,” Eve said, dropping into a chair next to Mira’s bed. “Since you were shot, he’s been clingy. I had to drive him to work myself to get him to leave me alone for a while.”
Mira closed the magazine and laid it aside. She shifted slightly so she was lying on her left side closer to see Eve. “He’s frightened, Eve. If Boone had gotten away with his plan, Roarke would be planning your funeral right now.”
Eve shifted uncomfortably. “I don’t want to worry him, but I can’t have him following me everywhere I go. I’m a cop, Mira. I can take care of myself.”
“And your scared,” Mira added. “If Boone tries again then Roarke could be killed trying to save you.”
Eve nodded. “Why did you push me out of the way, Mira?”
Mira smiled. “Mother’s instinct. Mothers don’t want to see their children hurt and they stop it, if they can. In an instant, I saw something that you didn’t. I wanted to save you pain.”
“I’m not your kid, though.” Eve reminded her.
“No, not by blood.” Mira smiled again. “Eve, the last few years you have shared things with me that make us similar to mother and daughter. I care deeply for you.”
“So do I.” Eve spluttered. “For you, I mean. I care a lot about you too.”
Mira laughed. “Go back to work, Eve. I’m going to be fine.”
Eve nodded and stood. She resisted the urge to check the card that came with Roarke’s flowers and instead left. On her way back to Cop Central, Eve tagged Peabody and asked her to book a conference room and gather everyone inside. After she ended the transmission with Peabody, she tagged Roarke. His beautiful face came on screen within minutes. Before he could open his mouth, Eve said. “Don’t talk. Just listen. I’m sorry about the bodyguard crack. I know you’re trying to protect me because you love me. I promise to be as careful as I can be. I love you. Bye.” Eve ended transmission.
The drive back to Cop Central was quick. By the time Eve found the conference room Peabody had booked, everyone was inside eating breakfast.
“Good morning,” She greeted everyone and pinned a picture of Kelsey Boone on the white board Peabody had brought in. “This is Kelsey Boone. He is the father of the late Daniel Boone. Judge Marcus, Andrew Costa, and myself helped put Daniel Boone in prison. He was killed during a beef with an inmate and now his father wants justice for his son’s death. I was the last victim in Boone’s murderous tirade and Doctor Mira is in the hospital now because of it.” Eve pressed her hands on the polished oak surface of the table and leaned over. “I know where he is and tonight Boone is mine.”
“How are you going to do that, kid?” Feeney asked.
“We’re going to set up a sting. A witness identified Kelsey Boone as living in Creeper’s Alley. We can’t just go in and get him because we could spook him. We’re going to play Mr. Boone’s game.”
“How?” Peabody asked.
Eve grinned.
