Justice in Death---Chapter 15

Before going to Cop Central, Roarke stopped by the mansion to pick up his link and speak to Summerset. Minutes after Roarke and Eve were back on the road, Summerset had the mansion secured. It would stay that way until the killer was found. Yancy met Eve in the bullpen. Everyone was there it seemed waiting on a word from her.

“Doctor Mira’s fine. She’ll have a nasty headache for a while, but the bullet grazed her. Speaking of bullet,” Eve turned to Peabody.

Peabody shook her head. “Still no luck on the bullet, Dallas. We’re trying to find a needle in a huge haystack.”

“Dig deeper,” Eve said and grabbed Yancy by the arm. “Are you ready?”

“Sure thing, Lieutenant. Where do you want to do this?”

“Break room,” Eve nodded toward the closed door with the black words painted on the window. Yancy walked ahead of them. Roarke and Eve followed.
When Yancy opened the door to the room, he shook his head at Roarke. “Sorry, Mr. Roarke. I don’t like distractions while I’m doing a sketch and no offense, Mr. Roarke, but you’re a distraction for the Lieutenant.”

Roarke opened his mouth, closed it, and glanced at Eve. “I’m in a safe place,” She promised him and entered the break room. Roarke took a seat outside and pulled out his PPA.

Thirty minutes later, Eve stepped out of the break room with a piece of paper in her hand. “Peabody, make several copies of this and distribute them to every beat cop. I’m going to put the picture in the system and see if we can’t get a name.” Eve looked over at Roarke who was standing now. “Do you want to come?”

   “Hip to hip, Lieutenant.”

“Sounds fun,” She quipped and walked purposefully to her office.

Roarke closed the door and sat down in the uncomfortable chairs that Eve had issued specifically for her office. “You don’t have to stay,” Eve said after a few minutes of silence. Eve was working on an ID for the shooter while Roarke had been on his PPA since Eve went in with Yancy. “If you have something better to do.”

Roarke looked up from his PPA. “You are my something better, Lieutenant. I was just handling some after meeting questions.”

Eve sat down feeling guilty. Mira wouldn’t have been shot, Roarke wouldn’t have missed his meeting. “He must have been following me, Roarke. It’s not like he could have shot me at the mansion or even walked into Cop Central with a gun.”

Roarke slipped his PPA into his jacket and sat up. “You think he was waiting for you outside of Cop Central?”

   Eve nodded.

“Eve, there’s a bank across the street from the police station.”

Eve grabbed her phone and called Baxter.

   “Yeah,” The detective answered.

“Baxter, I need you to take Trueheart, go across the street to the bank, and get their outdoor coverage from the ATM camera.”

There was silence and then, “We’re on the way, Dallas.”

Eve sat down and checked the computer. It was still searching for the killer’s face. Her thoughts went back to Mira in the hospital. If Eve hadn’t been pushed out of the way, the killer would have shot her. Eve didn’t even see the gun in the man’s hand. With the bank footage perhaps there would be something that could lead them to the killer. Eve knew the bank Roarke was talking about. She had used it once to get some cash before she married Roarke. It was a nice bank and the people were friendly. Of course, Eve thought, they positioned themselves across from Cop Central so maybe the security made them nice people.

Eve stepped to the window and looked out. The streets were crowded again with people. It was as if nothing had ever happened. Then again, New Yorkers were resilient and at times very helpful. Using that idea, Eve contacted Nadine.

“I was just going to get in touch with you,” Nadine said, shaking her head in the link. “I heard about Mira. My source at the hospital says she’s going to be okay. How are you?”

Eve glanced up at Roarke and smiled at his smile. “I’m alive because of Mira. Listen, Nadine, I have to run this by Commander Whitney, but how would Now like an exclusive on the killer.”

Nadine made a face into the screen. “If you’re joking with me, I’m going to find a way to steal that billionaire of yours.” Eve heard Roarke chuckle at the comment. Nadine made no notice of it so Eve realized she didn’t know Roarke was in the room.

“I’ll let you know everything we know. Give me a few hours to go over it with Commander Whitney and I’ll contact you.” Eve disconnected the call.

Eve studied Roarke who was back working on his PPA. There was a wisp of a smile on his face. God, Eve loved his smile. “I’d fight to get you back, just so you know,” Eve said.

Roarke stared up at her. “What?”

“If Nadine stole you from me, I’d fight to get you back.”

Roarke dropped his PPA onto his coat and walked over to Eve. He rubbed her arms and Eve closed her eyes reveling in the warmth of his hands. They circled her shoulders and squeezed. Eve let out a breath. “You would, would you?”

Eve heard him but was too sucked in by his hands on her body. “Yes,” She whispered and opened her eyes when he removed his hands. “There’s no way Nadine is getting my real coffee and chocolate score.”

Roarke let out a laugh that made Eve’s heart swell.

Eve is on the hunt now...This killer is toast.
