Justice in Death--Chapter 13

Eve and Roarke sat in the waiting room waiting for news. Thirty minutes had passed and Eve had received more news from Peabody than the emergency room doctors. Peabody’s last conversation with Eve wasn’t any different than the other three. The street had been cordoned off; officers were searching the area. At Roarke’s request, Peabody was going to bring him his link, which he had left in Eve’s office and was the reason why he was coming back to Cop Central at that fate-filled moment.

Eve had reached Dennis Mira at his office and couldn’t give him the news so Roarke told him everything. He was on his way and that was twenty-minutes ago.

The doors opened and a doctor came out. He stood in the center of the waiting room and looking around, frowned. “Who’s here with Charlotte Mira?”

“Me,” Eve practically shouted. She stood and Roarke came up with her. “I’m Lieutenant Dallas. I was with her when she was shot. Her husband’s on her way. Who are you?”

“Doctor Dharvi.” He had a slight Indian accent. I was called in for a neurology consult.” He found a seat and sat down. Eve followed suit while Roarke stood. “Mrs. Mira. “

“Doctor,” Eve corrected. “Her name is Doctor Mira.”

Doctor Dharvi nodded. “The medic that brought Doctor Mira in said she was taken down by a gunshot wound, however, I found no bullet in her scans. It looks like the bullet grazed her.”

    “That’s good, right?” Roarke asked.

The doctor didn’t answer. “I found no signs of internal bleeding. I did a second scan just to corroborate the first scan. Her head’s been stitched and wrapped. We’re going to keep her in ICU tonight and move her tomorrow. I will do a neuro exam on her once she is fully awake, but I see no signs of permanent damage. Doctor Mira is one lucky lady.”

“Eve!” A male voice dragged Eve’s attention away from the doctor. Dennis Mira stood against the front doors of the Emergency room in chocolate brown pants, forest green shirt, and matching tie.

“Where’s Charlie?”

Eve stood. “Doctor Dharvi, this is Doctor Mira’s husband, Dennis Mira.”

Mr. Mira came forward and the doctor shook his hand. “Let’s go see your wife, Mr. Mira, and I’ll tell you what I know.”

As if Peabody was psychic, her name lit up Eve’s link. Eve walked out of the Emergency Room to take
it. Roarke went with her. “What do you have, Peabody?”

“Nothing new to report. All the witnesses have been interviewed. I have Roarke’s link with me. Summerset has tagged him four times since I picked it up in your office. I didn’t feel right answering it.”
Roarke moved next to Eve so he could be seen. “It’s all right, Delia. I’ll contact him from here.”
“Listen, Peabody, your new objective is to find the bullet. The doctor couldn’t find a bullet in Mira so it has to be somewhere on that street. As soon as I’ve seen Mira I’m coming back to the station.” Eve ended the transmission and handed her link to Roarke.

Summerset came on the screen seconds later and Eve didn’t like the look of his face. His features were drawn and heavily lined while his face was flushed. Roarke must have seen the same thing in his friend because he asked about him.

“I’ve been trying to reach you on your link. The screen and radios are reporting that there was a shooting close to Cop Central.”

“Eve’s fine,” Roarke told him. “Doctor Mira was shot, but the bullet grazed her temple.”

“I’m happy that she will be all right, but that’s not why I was trying to contact you.” He huffed and Eve could tell from the shakiness of the link that Summerset was moving. “Shortly before the news announced the shooting, the perimeter alarm sounded."

Eve’s gut clenched and she reached out to grab Roarke’s arm. Had the killer tried to break into her home to come after her like he did the others? “Who was it, Summerset?”

“Not a whom, but a what. The perimeter alarm sounded because the gate had been tampered with.

When I went to see about it, I found a note taped to the gate. There are no outside markings on the
envelope.”

Eve glanced at Roarke at knew instinctively what was on the letter. “Open it, Summerset.” Roarke ordered him.

Several seconds passed as they heard the slicing of paper and then Summerset’s face went blank. That cinched it for Eve.

“Does the paper have the word Justice written on it, Summerset?”

    Summerset nodded.

“Okay, lay the letter down. I’m sending Peabody for it. Don’t touch it anymore then you already have.” When Roarke ended the transmission, Eve contacted Peabody. “Detective, go to my house and get the letter that Summerset will give you. Seal up before you touch it. We have proof that I was the intended victim. I’ll be in shortly.” Eve ended transmission and looked up to see Roarke frowning at her.

   “What?” She asked.

“From now on, you’re not going anywhere without me.”

Eve’s mouth dropped open. “What about your meeting that you’re already late for?”

“Hang the meeting, Eve. You’re safety, your well being is all that matters to me. Now, where do we go from here?”

“Lieutenant Dallas,” A sweet voice called her name from the entrance to the ER. Roarke took a step to the side so Eve could see who was talking to her.  “They called from the ICU. Doctor Mira is awake and asking for you.”

Eve glanced up at Roarke. “Answer your question?” She asked. Roarke took her hand and they walked back into the hospital together.

So glad Dr. Mira is okay. Now we need to know who is doing all this and why!!!
