Justice in Death---Chapter 12

Eve scrambled to sit up, even as she took stock of her surroundings. Roarke was at her side in seconds. “Are you all right?” He asked.

Eve nodded and then saw a glob of green on the ground where Mira was once standing. “Mira,” Her voice was a ghostly whisper. On hands and knees, Eve shuffled to her friend. Mira was unconscious and blood seeped from a wound on the side of her head.

“He shot her, Roarke!” Eve exclaimed. She shoved her hand against the wound, adding pressure to stop the bleeding. Even so, blood pooled from between her fingers. “He shot her in the head!”

Roarke was beside her in seconds using his suit jacket as a blanket.

“I’ve called for help!” A bystander called out. Eve looked around, unable to locate the voice but she pointed at a man in jeans and t-shirt. “You,” She ordered. “Run to Cop Central and get as many cops as you can here.” The man nodded, but stayed in place. “Go!” She screamed at him.

Eve turned back to Mira. The color in her face seemed to be seeping out with the blood of her head wound. “I can’t stop the bleeding, Roarke!”

Roarke touched her hair and worked around her to help make Mira comfortable. “You’re doing fine, Eve. Just keep the pressure steady.”

“She was the next victim,” Eve spoke. It took Roarke by surprise that she hadn’t realized the actual target. “I didn’t know it was going to be her. I would have had her protected.”

Sirens wailed in the background as police began filling in the gaps around Eve and Roarke.

Medics assessed Mira and then loaded her into the ambulance. Just using a look and not a word, Eve told Roarke she was going with Mira. Roarke took the limo and followed the ambulance to the hospital.

Roarke arrived shortly after the ambulance and found Eve in the waiting room. She was on her link with Peabody so Roarke took a seat and waited. It gave him time to catch his breath. Eve had been close to death so many times and this time was no different. His nightmare could very well have become a reality if it hadn’t been for Mira and now a person Eve cared about was in the Emergency Room.

Eve sat down beside Roarke. “Peabody has a team assessing the site. They’ve blocked off the street and witnesses are being interviewed. He shot Mira, Roarke. She was next on his list and I couldn’t stop him.”

Roarke took Eve’s hand and led her into the bathroom off from the waiting room. He locked the door behind them and turned to face Eve. “Eve,” He slipped his hands on her shoulders.

“The gunman wasn’t after Mira. The gun he held was pointed at you.”

Eve shook her head. Disbelief clouded her face. “He shot Mira. I was right there.”

Roarke took a breath. “I was coming across the street to meet you and Mira when I saw the gun, Eve. It was pointed at you. Mira saw it as well and knocked you out of the way. That’s when the gun went off.” He took another breath. “He was going to kill you.”

Eve looked up at Roarke. The disbelief that had clouded her face earlier had now been replaced with shock. “He was going to kill me and Mira saved my life. She was shot saving my life.” Tears threatened to fall from her eyes. “Roarke, that means. . .”

Roarke pulled her into his arms and tightened his embrace around her. “I know, baby. I know.”

Well darn it. Now Eve is not only a target, but she has the weight of guilt on her shoulders. It is enough to make me want to say a dirty word.

Great chapter.
