Past in Death
Chapter 32
Dinner was quiet. Eve and Lori shared a look when Roarke had come home he had said very little. Lori had told Eve she felt Roarke was worried about something. Eve had agreed. Both women decided to let Roarke tell them when he was ready.
“Lori, Eve, I met with Dr. Mira this afternoon.” Roarke said, breaking the silence.
“How did it go?” Lori asked.
“It was…a bit draining.” Roarke answered.
“Funny, I met with her this morning.” Eve replied.
Roarke looked at her. “You did?”
Eve nodded. “Yeah.”
“Let’s move to the parlor. We have a lot to talk about. The three of us.” Roarke suggested.
The three stood and moved to the parlor. Eve and Lori sat together while Roarke went to pour himself a glass of brandy. Unconsciously Lori reached over and grabbed Eve’s hand. Eve covered Lori’s hand with hers. Roarke sat in the arm chair across from them.
“Dr. Mira said I should discuss this with you two. You see, I’m having…” Roarke paused.
“Your nightmares.” Eve supplied.
“You…you knew?” He gaped.
It was Eve’s turn to sigh. “I knew the first night on the island. You had one every night, same goes for at Sinead’s. I didn’t say anything because I knew you would tell me when you were ready.”
Roarke reached for Eve. She extended her hand and grasped his. “You know me so well a ghrá.”
With those words Roarke told Eve and Lori about his dreams. He watched their faces reflect the shock and disbelief when he told them of watching Eve marry Webster.
“Oh Roarke. What on EARTH would give you such an idea?” Eve exclaimed.
“Dad, you should tell her. I think it will help explain a lot.” Lori said gently.
“That’s what I think too.” Roarke agreed. He took a slow breath. “Darling Eve, the night you were shot, Lori and I stopped to see Webster before going to the Palace. He told us that even under that chip’s control a part of him believed what he had been saying.
“He and I agreed you didn’t need to know about that conversation right away. Mira asked if that was on my mind when I wrote that letter. It was Eve. I also told her I knew with me gone Webster would probably try to make a move. Did he Eve?”
“No. In fact I haven’t seen him since the night he and I were shot.” Eve replied.
“Dad, these nightmares are a result of your guilt.” Lori stated. “However, it’s foolish to feel this way. What happened was not your fault.”
“Lori’s right. Roarke, perhaps Mira should come over.” Eve suggested.
Roarke nodded. He pulled out his link and tagged Mira. She said she’s be there in twenty minutes. While they waited Eve studied Roarke carefully. She wanted to go to him and just wrap him in her arms. Yet she could tell he felt even more guilty. It broke her heart.

Mira let herself into the house. If Summerset was around he was unaware of this meeting. Perhaps that was best for the moment. She moved into the parlor and took in the sight that greeted her.
Eve and Lori sat on the sofa, their hands joined. Roarke however stood at the window, seemingly lost in thought. Mira entered the room and closed the door behind her. The sound had all three turning to look at her.
“I told them.” Roarke announced.
“I can see that.” Mira nodded as she sat in the chair Roarke had pulled over. “Now that everything is out, we can discuss this.”
Roarke started to retake his seat, but Lori stopped him. She eased Roarke down beside Eve and took his chair instead. Mira smiled at the move. Lori would let Roarke and Eve talk now. The young woman knew, as Mira did, that this was about Eve and Roarke now.
“Eve, what do you feel about what Roarke told you?” Mira asked gently.
“I feel it ungrounded. First off, me and Webster? Come on ace, give me some credit.” Eve replied.
Roarke smirked. “Eve, believe me even in my dreams I wanted to rip him apart. Yet I found myself wondering if you would be happier with him.”
Eve took his hands in hers. “Roarke I don’t want anyone but you. I certainly wouldn’t want Don Webster.”
Lori spoke before Roarke could. “Dad, these feelings of guilt are normal. Just as your instinct was to run and try to protect mom and me. Having said that, you need to understand and accept that mom and me will not let you run from this. We want to help.”
“Lori’s right Roarke. Yes, your past is filled with shades of grey. You have made enemies but so has Eve. You both must realize your pasts can and have come back to haunt and hurt what you’ve built together.” Mira added.
“Roarke, every day since the day I met you, I’ve worried about my life as a cop putting you in harm’s way. Yet somehow I feel comforted knowing that as long as we’re together we can get through anything.” Eve said.
Roarke studied his wife. Her felt tears fill his eyes at her words. “I’ve been a fool Eve. I don’t want to be that fool anymore. I doubt I’ll ever completely forget what happened eight and a half months ago, but I know I can’t live without you and Lori.”
Mira smiled. “And that’s the first step in healing. For all three of you.”

Roarke exited the bathroom and smiled. He found Eve sitting in the sitting area reading something on her link. Galahad was curled contently on her lap. They both looked up when he approached.
“Working late Captain?”
“Actually it’s from Mavis. Seems she and Leonardo just found out she’s pregnant.”
Roarke smiled. Mavis, Leonardo, and Bella were spending the summer touring for Mavis’s latest album. He moved to her and sat beside her. Eve climbed onto his lap.
“She says Bella is thrilled about it.” Eve replied.
“I imagine.” Roarke chuckled.
Eve slid her arms around his neck. “Just think, maybe someday soon we’ll be able to tell Lori she’ll be a big sister.”
Roarke held her close and nuzzled her neck. “I look forward to telling her that.”
“Me too ace.” She giggled. She pulled back a little and cupped his face. “You feeling better Roarke? After talking to Mira.”
“I feel much better a ghrá. Like I said earlier, I may never forget it but I won’t let it ruin what you and I have built.” He stated.
Eve smiled and kissed him softly. “Good. Now it’s time for bed ace.”
Roarke saw the glint in her eyes. “As you wish a ghrá.”
Sweeping her into his arms he moved to the bed. Gently he eased her onto the mattress. “I love you Roarke.”
“I love you Eve. Deliriously.” He chuckled.

Webster sat in the living room of his darkened apartment. He read the article again. When he finished he let out a hiss and tossed his PPC down next to him. The article had been about Roarke’s return.
“The bastard! He nearly gets her killed and she takes him back!” He growled to the empty room.
Furious he started pacing. Earlier in the day Whitney had called a meeting with him, Tibble, Webster’s boss and Mira. Mira had stated that there could still be lingering side effect or emotions from Barrow’s chip.
“Stupid bitch. She caused me to be put on leave. It’s been eight months and I’m fine!” Webster yelled.
‘Are you?” a part of his mind asked.
“I’ll fix this. Then I’ll get what I want.” He vowed.
