Past in Death
Chapter 28
Eve really hated the outdoors, but there was something about the rustic cottage she found peaceful. Yet she wanted to burn the place to the ground because it was where Roarke had hid for the last eight months. Squaring her shoulders, Eve walked into the house.
The only thing she encountered was a domestic droid. “Hello ma’am.”
“Where’s Roarke?” Eve demanded. The droid started to speak but Eve held up a hand. “I didn’t say speak.”
The droid pointed to a solid oak door to her left. Eve turned and walked to it. Without hesitation she kicked the door open and walked in. It took her a moment but she found Roarke. He was slumped in a leather arm chair asleep. She frowned at what she saw in his right hand; a half empty whiskey bottle. Roarke was actually passed out drunk.
She stormed over, yanked the bottle from his hand and upended the rest over his head. Roarke sputtered and jerked awake. His Irish blue eyes moved around the room though, judging by the smell in the room, he wasn’t focusing too clearly. Finally his eyes landed on her.
“Eve.” He sighed. Then he half chuckled half sobbed. “Even in dreams I can’t escape you.”
“I refuse to talk to you while you’re drunk.” Eve stated.
Roarke stumbled to his feet. She watched as he somehow remained upright and walk to a cabinet. Roarke downed the two bottles of sober up. With a low groan he turned. His eyes widened when he realized that what he had thought was a dream wasn’t.
“Ev…Eve?”
“You got that right. Now, we’re going to talk ace.”
“How?”
“It doesn’t matter. What does matter is you coming home with me.”
Roarke turned away. “Go back to New York Eve. I don’t belong there anymore.”
Eve’s temper flared. “That’s bullshit! You’re coming home with me if I have to drag your ass there! For the last eight months you’ve had me, Lori, Summerset and Terry scared to death.”
Roarke spun, anger flashing in his blue eyes. “I nearly got you killed!”
“You want a fight ace, let’s go. I’m ready to kick that billion dollar Irish ass of yours.” Eve shot back.
The rage Roarke had bottled up came spewing out. He and Eve circled each other. She still felt lust at seeing the wolf in him ready to pounce, but she clamped it. She had a plan and him still being drunk would only make it easier. Roarke made the first move.
He went for a body tackle, but Eve turned and, just to be cute, delivered a kick to his ass. Roarke hit the desk but was facing her again moments later. He charged again. Eve ducked and went for a leg sweep but he twisted and grabbed her from behind.
Eve drove her elbow back and into his stomach. Roarke grunted and his hold on her loosened. She twisted but Roarke anticipated her. Eve found herself pinned beneath him. Their eyes locked and held.
“Go home Eve.” Roarke sighed releasing her hands.
“Not without you Roarke.” Eve said.
Quick as a snake, she pulled out the pressure syringe and pressed it to Roarke’s neck. He cursed as he scrambled to his feet. When Eve stood he could only stare at her in complete and utter shock.
“You…tranqued…me.” His voice already slurring.
“Sorry Roarke, but you left me no choice. You’re coming home.” She replied easing him into a chair. He was unconscious in seconds. Eve pulled out her link. “All clear, come on up.”
“On my way Eve.” Alex responded.
As Eve waited, she moved to Roarke. She placed her hand on his cheek where she felt a stubble forming. “What happened to you out here Roarke? What would drive you to try and drink yourself to death?”
Alex walked in and gaped. “Jesus. What has he done to himself?”
“My guess is drink himself into oblivion. He was passed out drunk when I got here. I tranqued him and Summerset said it should keep him out till tomorrow. Come on, let’s get him on his jet.” Eve explained.

Several hours later, Eve, Summerset, Lori and Terry gently laid Roarke on the bed. As soon as Alex and Eve got to the house, Summerset, Lori and Terry were waiting. They got Roarke upstairs and into the bathroom.
Eve and Summerset bathed Roarke thoroughly. The clothes he had been wearing were burned. Once Roarke was bathed, dressed in pajamas and cleanly shaven, he was carried into the bedroom. Eve frowned a moment.
“He’s going to be pissed. Summerset, bring me two restraints.” Eve ordered.
Lori worried her bottom lip. “Mom, do you we have to restrain him? I don’t feel right about that.”
Eve moved to Lori. “Trust me. If he wakes up and he’s not restrained he may very well try to run again. I won’t let that happen.”
“Your mom is right Ms. Lori. Roarke went to great lengths to stay hidden.” Summerset agreed as he handed Eve one of the restraints.
Once Roarke was secured, Summerset ushered Lori and Terry off to bed. Eve pulled a chair over from the sitting area and sat down. Galahad padded over and hopped into her lap. She let out a slow breath and watched Roarke sleep.
“I’m so sorry Roarke, but I can’t go on without you anymore.” Eve whispered. She reached over and grabbed his left hand. “I love you Roarke. I love you so much.”
Eve leaned back in the chair. With Galahad curled in her lap she slowly drifted off to sleep. That was how Summerset found her an hour later. He grabbed a blanket from the sofa and covered her with it.
“Rest now Eve, you brought him home to us. Now we’ll keep him home.” He whispered.
