Chapter 17
Roarke stood in Observation at Central. It appeared word reached Dr. West about Eve’s abduction and Zapata’s involvement. He was in New York by seven the morning after Eve was taken.
“Dr. West, do you understand your rights as I read them?” Peabody asked.
“I do Detective. However, I have one request.” West answered.
“Okay.” Peabody nodded.
“I would like, if it’s possible, for Captain Dallas’s husband to be present. I feel he should hear what I have to say.” West requested.
In Observation Roarke and Whitney were stunned. So was Feeney. “Jack, what’s he up to?”
“I don’t know Feeney.” Whitney replied. He faced Roarke. “This is highly unorthodox, but I will allow you in there.”
“I want to be in there. If he knows something about where Eve was taken, I need to know.” Roarke agreed.
“I’m going with you. Hell, Dallas is going to have ALL our asses for this one.” Feeney grumbled.

Peabody looked up. “Entering interview, Whitney, Commander Jack, Feeney, Captain Ryan, and Roarke.”
“Dr. West, though it’s unorthodox, I am allowing Roarke to sit in. However, Captain Feeney will remain.” Whitney said.
“That’s fine.” West nodded.
Whitney exited the room while Roarke sat next to Peabody. Feeney remained standing. “Okay, Dr. West, you came in voluntarily and the NYPSD appreciates your cooperation. You stated you had information on Dr. Lewis Zapata.” Peabody began.
West cleared his throat. “That is correct. About six maybe seven months ago, I received a memo from the Warden saying Inmate Barrow’s attorney had requested a different doctor. Now under policy I still oversaw these meetings. Zapata was assigned. I observed the first two sessions. Inmate Barrow seemed to respond very well so I approved. Then a month ago I noticed that the reports I received had been doctored.”
“What did you do Dr. West?” Peabody inquired.
“I followed procedure. I went to the Warden. We both took it upon ourselves to alert ILE. ILE began quietly investigating Zapata. We knew if Inmate Barrow got out he could and would go after Captain Dallas and Roarke.”
West replied.
“What made you think that?” Feeney injected.
“When he first arrived I met with him. He quickly voiced his feelings toward the Captain and Roarke. It’s true when he was initially arrested he was considered a low risk for physical violence. While awaiting trial however, and somehow this was kept quiet, he killed another inmate. It was found to be in self-defense, but none the less he caught a taste for blood it seems. By the time he got to me, that blood lust had grown considerably.
“I voiced the fears and they were acknowledged. Inmate Barrow was monitored 24/7. During his time at Rexal he went from being scrawny to a formidable man. He build muscle and somehow conned other inmates to teach him different martial arts. When Zapata took over, Inmate Barrow appeared to control his desires to kill Captain Dallas and Roarke. I however wasn’t fooled.”
“Dr. West, how did Barrow escape and where is Zapata?” Peabody asked.
West ran his fingers through his hair. “I don’t know. As soon as I heard what happened I was on the first transpo here from Omega.”
Roarke studied the doctor. “Dr. West, my wife is in the hands of Barrow and the woman who orchestrated this whole thing. We believed Zapata is dead. We need your help.” He paused. “Please.”
West met Roarke’s eyes. “Inmate Barrow often spoke in his sleep. Repeatedly he would mention delving into Captain Dallas’s mind. Wanting to find her dark secrets. I…I don’t know where he would go here in New York. Having said that, wherever he and this woman are, it would have to be large enough to house a studio. He often spoke of continuing his work.”

Eve struggled against her restraints. All that accomplished was sending her injured ribs screaming in pain. Hissing through the pain, Eve tried to calm herself and think. ‘Okay Dallas, think.’ She slowed her breathing and focused on her surroundings. ‘I’m in a basement of some kind. Looks like Barrow has set up shop again. That can’t be good.’
Eve shivered as she recalled he run in with Jess and his programming seven years ago. It also brought back the memory of what happened the night of Mavis’s party and what Roarke had been forced to because of Jess. Her head jerked when the door opened.
“How are you feeling Eve.” Jess smiled.
“Let me go you asshole and I’ll show you.” Ev countered.
Jess laughed as he moved to a console across from Eve’s cot. “Now, I finally get to complete my project. The one you and Roarke interrupted seven years ago.”
She watched as he approached the console. As he started turning dials, Magdalena entered the room. “I’m just in time it seems.”
“You sure are Maggie. Seven years ago I developed a program that tapped into Roarke’s dark side. I didn’t get to see the results, but this time I get to tap into Eve’s.” Jess replied as he approached Eve.
Eve started to panic but somehow her voice stayed calm. “Tell me Barrow, how did a pussy like you manage to suddenly become a wannabe bad-ass?”
Jess glared down at Eve. “I learned in prison. Because of you I had to fight bitch. Because of you I had to fight for my life every day. Now, you’ll know that feeling bitch. Then I’ll go see your husband and his spawn and they’ll know that feeling too.”
Before Eve could blink he pressed the pressure syringe to her neck. Eve’s vision blurred before she fell asleep. Magdalena watched in sick fascination as Jess attached a plastic helmet to Eve. He then moved to a camera he had set up in the room.
“What are you doing Jess?”
“Making a little video for our friend Roarke.”
