“Hi, I’m Detective Peabody and this is Lieutenant Dallas. We’re in charge of this investigation,” Peabody started. Eve stood in the background, just watching.
“I – I – I’m Zatch, Zatch Brennan” Zatch stuttered out.
“Ok Zatch, would you like some fizzy drink or something before we get started?” Peabody asked, trying to make him feel more comfortable.
“No, I’m okay. I just want to get this over and done with and just go home. I really want to go home,” Zatch said, feeling less afraid thanks to Peabody’s gentle demeanour.
“Alright, just a few questions then since we could not interview you at the scene. For starters, what exactly were you doing near a dank alley at almost 4am?” Peabody asked.
“I couldn’t sleep so I went for a bite. I live a few streets over. There’s a 24/7 burrito place around the corner of the alley. It’s the nearest 24/7 to my place. I got the burrito and finished it in less than a minute and I figured, I’d go for a walk before heading back and that’s when I heard the scream and – and. Look, I already told the officers what happened. Could I please not go through this again,” Zatch pleaded.
“I know that Zatch but we need to establish a clear timeline. It’s the only way that we can catch the bastard who did this,” Peabody coaxed.
“Ok, ok erm, I heard a scream. A very high pitched female scream emanating from the alley and I thought that someone might be in trouble but before I could get to the alley, a man came running out and he knocked me down onto the ground. When I finally got my bearings again, I wanted to go look in the alley and I know I should have but I didn’t dare. I called the cops and they arrived in minutes. They told me to stay where I was whilst they go check the alley but I couldn’t just stand there. I followed them into the alley and that’s when I saw it and – and; please don’t make me go through this part again,” Zatch all but begged with tears in his eyes.
“Alright, I got it. You don’t have to be afraid. You’re safe in here. Do you think you could describe the man who knocked you down?” Peabody asked.
“No, It was pretty dark and all I saw before he knocked me down was that he was rather tall, over 6 foot tall, relatively medium build and he was wearing a black hoodie with the cap up. That’s all I managed to see. I’m sorry that I can’t help more,” Zatch apologized profusely.
“That’s okay Zatch but if you do think of anything else, please contact us immediately. Don’t leave the city; we might need to talk to you again. You can go now. Thank you,” Peabody said.
“No problem,” Zatch replied as he gladly left the room.
“What do you think Lieutenant?” Peabody asked.
“It’s vague on details but it’s better than nothing. Good job Peabody. Now, we need to assemble the information and see if the system has identified our victim yet,” Eve said as they left the room as well.
“Zatch was absolutely terrified of you, that much was obvious. You didn’t even say anything and you struck fear in him,” Peabody said with a smile.
“It’s a gift Detective, an extremely useful gift to have in this job. Let’s grab some grub from the cafeteria first. I’m hungry enough to eat their crap,” Eve said as they headed to the cafeteria.
