Omega In Death - Chapter 5

By the time Eve got into Central, it was barely 6am. The second she walked into her office, she went straight for her AutoChef and programmed a steaming hot cup of coffee. She brought the coffee to her desk and just inhaled the wonderful smell but she couldn’t bring herself to drink it after what she had seen earlier. She put the coffee down on her desk and just laid her head face-down onto her desk, sighing in exhaustion. Between the crap with Shawn Tennant, her fight with Roarke and the morning’s murder, she felt completely worn out and the day hadn’t even begun proper yet.

A loud knock on her door awoke her from her reverie. “Come in,” Eve mumbled with her head still on her desk.

Peabody walked in with a file in her hands, looking a lot better than she did an hour ago. “Is something wrong Lieutenant?” Peabody asked worriedly when she saw Eve.

“Nah, I’m fine, just bloody tired. What do you have there?” Eve asked as she straightened up and stretched, noticing the file in her partner’s hand.

“Oh, it’s from the 12th Precinct. It’s the witness statement and a preliminary findings report,” Peabody said as she handed Eve the file.

“I didn’t see a witness. There was a witness?” Eve asked.

“Well, sorta. The witness was Zatch Brennan. According to the report, he called the police and the first respondent was from the 12th. When the officers got there, he said that he heard a loud scream coming from the alley and he saw a man running out, running into Brennan. The officers went to the alley where he supposedly heard the screams and found the body. Zatch was walking behind them and when he saw the body, he had a panic attack and passed out so they had to take him to the hospital. I called the hospital and spoke to him. He’ll be here at 8am for interview,” Peabody replied as Eve looked through the file.

“Alright then, what about the omega sign? Any hits from the databases?” Eve asked.

“Not really. There were some hits with ritualistic insignias but none that fits the profile,” Peabody replied.

“Ritualistic?” Eve asked quizzically.

“Yeah, the omega sign? It generally represents the end or rather, the bringer of doomsday. At least that’s what I’ve gotten from my search so far. It’s from the Bible,” Peabody said.

“Oh come on! That’s just what we need, a ritualistic murderer. Do we have an ID on our victim?” Eve asked.

“We managed to pull her prints, or rather what was left of it. We are trying to match it within the system. If she ever even got a parking ticket, we’ll have her. I’m sorry about having to leave earlier. I really couldn’t handle that much gore. Won’t happen again, Lieutenant,” Peabody apologized.

“It’s fine Peabody. It was pretty gruesome, even by my standards,” Eve said trying to pacify Peabody’s guilt.

“Sure, but you barely flinched,” Peabody mumbled in return.

“I’ve got 12 years on the force, Detective. In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve learnt to internalize a lot of crap,” Eve pointed out.

“Yeah, I suppose so,” Peabody said just as someone knocked on the door.

“Come in,” Eve said.

Officer Troy Trueheart walked in. “Lieutenant, your witness is here early. He’s in Room A,” Trueheart said.

“Thanks Officer. Trueheart, why exactly are you here at 7am?” Eve asked curiously as she and Peabody got ready to head out.

“I have some paperwork to finish up from our last case. The DA wants it by 9am sharp,” Trueheart replied.

“Sounds fun, enjoy!” Eve joked.

“I will Lieutenant, thank you!” Trueheart said with a big smile as he headed back to his seat.

“I wanna say that he’s being sarcastic but I think he actually does enjoy paperwork. Sheesh,” Eve muttered.

“Oh, he does. He once told me that paperwork sometimes gives him a new perspective on some cases,” Peabody injected.

“Wow, seriously. It really does take all kinds. Damn, our witness looks fidgety,” Eve said as they arrived outside Room A.

“I would be too Lieutenant if I saw a dead body like that at 4 in the morning,” Peabody pointed out.

”I suppose. Let’s see what he has to say then. Peabody, take point. He’s all yours, I’m just there to observe,” Eve said as they walked into the room to interview their witness.

NR picked a wonderful name for the young officer. Troy definitely seems true of heart.
