Eve stood with Mira in observation while Tibble stood with the Mayor of Florence, his eyes set on Chief Carter.
“There’s more,” Eve and Mira turned to see a tall girl with long brown hair in the doorway to observation.
“Who are you?” Eve demanded.
“Nora Carter. That’s my father in there being questioned.”
“What do you mean there is more?” Eve asked.
“Well, seeing as you’re not in there strangling him, he hasn’t told you everything.”
“He hasn’t told us anything,” Eve told her, “His lawyers are blocking us. The county commissioner is on vacation. We have Marino’s records and statement and that’s it.”
“Then I’d like to give my statement. On two conditions.”
“Two?”
“You don’t charge me with obstruction. Technically, my knowledge of the operation was minimal. Also, my sister’s part in this is never revealed. I don’t want her buried with a bad name. My father has ruined enough.”
“Okay then. We’ll set this up in another interview room. This isn’t my house, but Lieutenant McNab has given me full control.”
“Where is he?”
“With the rest of our team, searching for Myers, Peabody and Officer Trueheart.”
“Lieutenant Dallas, did Detective Peabody kill my sister?”
Eve shook her head, “Detective Marino gave a full statement, pinning Detective Myers with the murder. I am sorry to tell you we gave her a deal that will not have her in a cage as long as she deserves.”
Nora nodded, “It’s the politics, I understand. I am not happy about it, but I understand.”
“It’s still going to be a while. Conspiracy isn’t a light sentence, even with the deal she’s going in for 30 years.”
“I can wait that long to punch her in her pretty face.”
“I’ll get you set up and we’ll start your interview as soon as possible.”
“Thank you.”
As Nora went to wait in a civilian area, Eve answered her pocket link.
“We’re on our way in,” it was Roarke, “Baxter, McNab and Morris are following a possible trail. Feeney is going over security at the place where they had Trueheart. Whitney and I are coming to help you.”
“No rush. We can’t do anything really until we have more evidence. Can’t do that with out Myers or the Commissioner coming in. He’s on vacation. With the holiday tomorrow, everything is kind of a mess.”
“Then why is there a gleam in your eye?”
“The chief’s other daughter is here. She’s going to clear some things up.”
Trueheart trudged through the mud, his eyes squinted against the rain. When he noticed the car parked ahead on the side of the road, his heart skipped a beat. He pulled the stolen weapon out of his pocket and approached cautiously. There was nobody in the car, but he had recognized it right away. It was the car the two nurses had driven away in.
Looking around, he made sure he was alone. Then he broke the window on the driver’s side and released the trunk. When it opened he saw that it was empty. They had to be somewhere nearby, he knew, and Peabody was with them.
As he shut the trunk he heard the voices. Spinning around, he saw both women, one of them aiming a stunner right at him.
“Don’t move, boy, this thing is on high.”
